What is the gift of a new life in Jesus?

We are welcomed into God’s family once we believe Jesus, God’s son, died as punishment for our sins. Jesus told Nicodemus, “Unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” John 3:3(English Standard Version). We are born into God’s spiritual family. You have a physical birth to your parents. Then, you are adopted into God’s family when you accept Christ as your Savior. With this adoption, you also gain many brothers and sisters who are also Christians. This adopted Father, God, and family will always have your back!

Being in God’s family brings the benefit of eternal life with Him. Jesus tells us, “Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment but has passed from death to life” John 5:24(ESV). The penalty for sin is death and separation from God. You will not face judgment or punishment for your sin because Jesus already did. You will no longer be separated from God again. After this physical body dies, you will live in God’s presence forever, along with the rest of His family.

What does the new life of Christ require of us?

Eternal life as a Christian is a gift from God. He doesn’t require anything from us other than to believe. We cannot work for eternal life or buy it. “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 6:23(ESV) A relationship with God is not something to be earned through work. The only thing asked of us is to believe. Believe Jesus is the son of God. Believe he walked this Earth as a perfect example to us, then died taking the punishment for our sins and restoring our relationship with God. Paul and Silas told their jailer, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” Acts 16:31(ESV). It is as simple as that: Believe.

What does new life in Christ mean?

Ok, you have believed and accepted that Jesus died to free you from sin and restore your relationship with God. You are part of His family forever, but what does that mean for you right now? You are brand new. Anything from your past that has held you back or brought you guilt is gone in the eyes of God, and you can let them stay in the past as well. Don’t let your history hold you back any longer. You are no longer that person. Live with the confidence that you are a new creation.

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.”

2 Corinthians 5:17 (ESV)

Wants Change

Even better, you can change because God has sent the Holy Spirit, to help you. (John 14:26) Because of this, wants change after becoming a Christian. There is a desire to lean toward spiritual things like being around other believers, reading the Bible to learn more about God and living for Him, and praying. God fills a void that has been missing, making us feel more content with what we have. You may desire to possess fewer items than you once did. There will be habits that are no longer appealing or beneficial. This can be anything from cursing, what you watch for entertainment, excessive drinking, or eating to feel better. There is less focus on “me” and a willingness to help others. Jesus came to help us and to serve. He was not focused on Himself but on what God wanted Him to do. We should do the same.

You bring the light.

God is always with you, so you can be a light and love those around you. I say light because Jesus said he is the light of the world living in darkness. (John 8:12) This is spiritual darkness or separation from God. When light is put into a dark room, the room is lit, and we can see everything. The light that shines through you is evidence of the Holy Spirit indwelling in you. It shows up as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23) The world needs to see us as different. We should bring light into any room we enter.

In conclusion, finding a fresh start or a new beginning in life can be achieved through the transformative power of Jesus Christ. Whether you feel lost, burdened by past mistakes, or searching for meaning, Jesus offers a guiding light in the darkness. By surrendering to His love and forgiveness, you can experience a profound transformation that only comes from a relationship with Christ. The gift of a new life in Jesus means being welcomed into God’s family, where you gain eternal life and the support of a loving community of believers. This gift is freely given through faith, as God does not require anything else from us. Once you accept Jesus as your Savior, your past no longer holds you back, and you can live with confidence as a new creation. With the guidance of the Holy Spirit, you will desire spiritual growth, seek to help others, and be a light in the world, reflecting the love and qualities of Christ.
